Scrivener Quick Start | An Overview of the User Interface

There are three main working areas on the Scrivener user interface:

  1. THE BINDER: Is a document browser that keeps all your files and folders together in one place. 
  2. THE EDITOR: Is where you do all your writing and view the content of your files. From its Footer Bar you can zoom in on your text, see the word or character count for the current document and set yourself word count targets. 
  3. THE INSPECTOR WINDOW: Holds synopses, notes and links to articles. It also tracks status and custom metadata depending on which function you choose from its header bar menu.

You can show and hide the Binder by opening the View dropdown menu in the Toolbar.

If you don't see the Inspector Menu on your screen click on the Inspector Icon in your toolbar. Click on it once again to hide the Inspector menu.

Resize your working areas

You can resize any of the working areas by hovering your cursor over the boundaries between them until it changes to an arrow, then dragging it in either direction.

There are three important root folders in the Binder which you cannot remove but you can rename them or add as many sub-folders and documents to them as you like:

  1. The Manuscript/Draft/Screenplay Folder: Where you place all the text documents that will eventually export with your manuscript, draft or screenplay depending on what you are writing. 
  2. The Research Folder: Where you keep all your research including images, text and links to media files like audio and video so that you can access them from within your project. 
  3. The Trash Folder: where you store deleted items until you decide to get rid of them permanently.

Delete documents in Scrivener

To delete documents from the Trash folder permenently go to: Project > Empty Trash
